FREE  E-LEARNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

Beginning this August, we will be offering FREE e-learning workshops to users of Introduction to Algebra by way of an online delivery system just made available to us at UCLA. We are excited to be among the first to field test the system at UCLA, and to explore effective ways to teach interactive material using e-learning technology.

Sessions will be held each Tuesday, beginning August 18, 2009, for about 30 minutes. Please log in 15 minutes prior to the start time of the session for a warmup activity and equipment check.

The training will be delivered through Elluminate, an online virtual classroom platform. To participate, a user must have a computer with working speakers, JAVA, and access to the web.  A microphone is also nice to have, but not essential. To determine if your computer has this capacity, you can go to www.elluminate.com/support and follow online directions (Steps 1, 2, 3). Should you have any problems, please feel free to contact Jo Packham (jopackham@math.ucla.edu).

The Writing Team is excited to have access to this new technology, and an opportunity to learn to use it effectively. While we do not believe that e-learning will replace “face-to-face” professional development, we do see it as an accessible tool for teachers who are not able to attend training or who wish added support and insight into the content and pedagogy of Introduction to Algebra lessons.

To receive announcements about this new program, including links to the weekly workshops, please email jopackham@math.ucla.edu and provide her with the following information:
