Each week of Introduction to Algebra
is structured in the same way. Students receive a packet of
student pages (SP), which offer manageable chunks of material
and a fresh start for success each week. The layout and language
of the student pages give struggling students (especially English
learners) full access to the curriculum. The Teacher Guide
(TG) provides complete instruction for the three lessons in
the week. Also available are blackline masters for overhead
transparencies (OH), reproducibles (R), and assessments (A).
Week
12 Summary
Week 12 is provided here for downloading and review. This week
includes one lesson on linear functions and two lessons on
fraction multiplication.
Concepts of linear functions are
introduced and revisited throughout the year-long course. In
Lesson 12.1,
students determine the
amount of time needed to save for the purchase of a camera,
using input-output equations, tables, graphs, and words.
Students learn the slope-intercept form of a line in a meaningful
context,
and they are led to appreciate the use of the formula.
The
first semester of the course includes a heavy emphasis on skill
development. Lessons 12.2 and 12.3 extend the concepts
and procedures for multiplication of whole numbers to fractions.
Students interpret multiplication of a fraction as repeated
addition, and they use an area model (introduced in Week 1)
to understand multiplication of two fractions or mixed numbers.
From diagrams and examples, the students observe that the “multiply
across” rule for multiplication of fractions is a sensible
procedure. Summative assessment of fraction multiplication
occurs in Week 17 after five weeks of concentrated and periodic
practice on the topic.
